On May 25, China Unicom and the Guangdong provincial government have entered into a strategic cooperation agreement, whereby China Unicom will earmark 35 billion RMB (US$5.1 billion; US$1 = 6.8 RMB) for the telecom network deployment in the Guangdong province over the next five years, the Sina Tech News reported on May 26. Pursuant to the agreement, China Unicom will carry out projects in Guangdong regarding telecom infrastructure deployment, the promotion of e-government and e-commerce, wireless broadband network deployment based on WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology, rural IT development, public information platforms, and telecom infrastructure sharing. To date, the company has spent around 12 billion RMB (US$1.8 billion) into the IT infrastructure in the said province. Aside from China Unicom, China Telecom and China Mobile also separately clinched similar agreements with the said provincial government, in a bid to strengthen their telecom infrastructure in Guangdong.

- Guangdong Mobile, the subsidiary of China Mobile in Guangdong, is set to earmark 3.5 billion RMB (US$514.7 million) for the development of its TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous CDMA) service in Huizhou city, Guangdong province, southern China. Aiming to accelerate the TD-SCDMA deployment in the said city, Guangdong Mobile has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Huizhou municipal government on May 25. Pursuant to the agreement, they will collaborate in several areas, including the deployment of TD-SCDMA networks, the promotion of e-government and e-commerce, the upgrading of industrial structure, the construction of new rural areas, and the development of wireless city in Huizhou city.
